Cayetana – Nervous Like Me (Tiny Engines)
2014 was a great year for the Philadelphia music scene. You’ll find War on Drugs occupying space on most mainstream Best Of lists; Restorations released the tremendous LP3; and The Districts signed to Fat Possum Records. While geographical proximity has no bearing on inclusion here, Nervous Like Me, the debut album from Cayetana spoke loudest to my punk roots.
Filled with violence and hooks galore, mental anguish and low end power, Nervous Like Me‘s restrained anxiousness is without pretense. Augusta Koch’s adenoidal vocals are anchored by Allegra Anka’s chiming Peter Hook bass lines and Kelly Olsen’s thundering drums on 11 songs of 20-something angst, suburban escapism and urban realism. Brash and bashful, the scrappy pop-punk gems on Nervous Like Me are a triumph of outcasts having the last word, once they found their collective voice.
