Best of 2013 #2: Wooden Wand – Blood Oaths of the New Blues

Best of 2013 – #2

Wooden Wand – Blood Oaths of the New Blues (Fire Records)

imagesReleased early in 2013 — when this site was in its infancy and before I even contemplated writing reviews — Blood Oaths of the New Blues by Wooden Wand crept into my world on the strength of “Southern Colorado Song,” a ghostly recounting of the Doherty trio’s cross-country crime trek. Having wrongly ignored James Jackson Toth’s output following Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg, the airiness, sparse instrumentation and nuanced storytelling on songs like “Outsider Blues” and “Supermoon” placed me firmly back into the Wooden Wand camp.

Perhaps serving as the album that best sums up my 2013 musical journey, Blood Oaths of the New Blues is one hell of a ride.

Not one to rest, Wooden Wand released a follow up album, Wooden Wand & World War IV, in October via Three Lobed Recordings. Stream/purchase here.
